zantac.jpgZantac is a drug that slows down the production of the gastrointestinal acid that your stomach makes. It is used mainly to control and respond to peptic ulcers in the stomach and intestines. Zantac or ranitidine, it’s common name, can also be used to manage gastroesophageal reflux disease, (GERD) and other ailments where the acid backs up into the esophagus from the stomach resulting in a painful condition known as heart burn. Although actual heart problems can be mistaken as heart burn, it’s really a misnomer because it has nothing to do with the heart.

Your physician could also prescribe Zantac for other ailments other than those outlined here. Before your general practitioner prescribes you any new drug, make sure you inform him or her of the other medications you are currently taking to make sure they don’t clash with each other.

The usual formulation of Zantac is as effervescent tablets that you will need to add with water to ingest. Others are in tablet or capsule style while the Zantac dose for children is in liquid form.

Some people have expressed concerns about any relationship between Zantac and high blood pressure. I’ll get to that shortly.

Zantac has many possible side effects that you need to draw to the awareness of your health practitioner as soon as you notice them. These don’t effect everybody, in fact they are not that common.
