There are several varieties and it may be possible that you will be prescribed all of them. None of these treatments is perfect and you may experience high blood pressure medication side effects. If you do experience side effects and they are troubling you, consult your medical practitioner because there are ways of minimising the effects.

Diuretics

On of the high blood pressure medication side effects from this form of medication is to reduce the amount of potassium in your blood stream. This can result in feeling weak or tired all the time and leg cramps. This particular manifestation of high blood pressure medication side effects can be helped by replacing the potassium, either by a diet high in potassium or with supplements.

Another very painful form of high blood pressure medication side effects is gout. A very painful inflammation of a joint, usually in the big toe. Personally I find a supplement of celery and juniper tablets keeps this particular member of the high blood pressure medication side effects family at bay.

If you are a diabetic, then another possible one of the high blood pressure medication side effects could be an increase in your blood sugar levels. Monitor this carefully and report any adverse findings to your health practitioner.

Beta-Blockers

Beta- blockers have the effect of slowing the heart rate and reducing the power of heart. Fine for lowering blood pressure but it does lead to a variety of high blood pressure medication side effects. You may get cold hands and feet or you may feel depressed or frequently tired. Asthma, insomnia and impotence may well also show themselves as high blood pressure medication side effects. Diabetics who are on insulin need to monitor the effects of this class of drugs. As always report any adverse high blood pressure medication side effects to your health care practitioner.

ACE Inhibitors and Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers

A nasty cough is one of the most common high blood pressure medication side effects of this class of drug, however it can usually be fixed by changing brands. Loss of taste, a skin rash and on rare occasions kidney damage are also possible. Occasionally angiotensin II receptor blockers can make you dizzy, so be aware of this walking or traveling alone.

Alpha Blockers and Combined Alpha and Beta-Blockers

Again these classes of drugs may have high blood pressure medication side effects including dizziness when standing up. This particular effect could be considered good because it means your BP is nice and low. Just be aware of it and don’t stand up too quickly.

Whatever high blood pressure medication side effects you may be experiencing consult with your health practitioner about the best way to minimise them and remember that the high blood pressure medication side effects you are having are probably preferable exposing yourself to the dangers associated with hypertension.

You can keep an eye on your blood pressure at home quickly and easily with an inexpensive BP monitor. (See sidebar to left)
